Some notes about your first song and First Dance
A good wedding song generally should have a steady beat you can follow. Note: The song you select determines the dance you do.
Often Standards such as many songs by Sinatra, Gerschwin, Cole Porter, etc. are Foxtrots, a good dance for beginning dancers.
Other dances like the Waltz, Tango, Swing or Salsa, (or a combination of two dances) may be easily doable, based on the song and a few lessons on your part.
You may find you've selected your favorite dance before you chosen your wedding song; at that point, you will select the music to fit that dance style.
If you need help selecting music... ask your dance instructor.
Try to select a song that is roughly two to three minutes long.
After a few lessons, use a CD to practice your dance to get comfortable with the dance steps you've learned and the dance's rhythm pattern.
Also try to practice with other songs and tempos so you can dance to different songs comfortably.
Practice is the only way to really become comfortable, leading and following, enabling
you to look and feel good when you do dance. Like anything else, the more you do it, the easier it is.
If you can, practice between lessons.... even a few minutes, a couple of times each week, really make a difference.
If possible, know the size and dimensions of your wedding reception dance floor and tell your instructor.
If you can, decide when you will do your first dance (at the beginning of the Reception,
in the middle, after the cake cutting, or dinner.
Inform your Band or DJ when you plan to do your first dance, and be sure they'll play the song at the tempo (speed) you practiced, or one where you are comforatble.
Also, be sure to tell your photographer and or Videographer when you plan to do your First
Dance and any special moments or featured dance moves you'd like them to capture: a
dip, a turn, a twirl, or the big ending.
No matter what happens during your first dance... forget a step or
miss a beat or two of the rhythm pattern, just keep dancing, recover, and enjoy this incredible moment together.
Most importantly, always have fun !
