The recommended number of lessons for a Wedding Dance.
In Ten lessons, you should feel absolutely comfortable on the dance floor, dancing together. Your First dance will be free of anxiety,
and that confidence will be apparent to everyone.
It allows you the time and space to learn a minimum of six steps in
at least four or five different dances, being comfortable doing any step at any time,.
The focus will, of course, be on the steps and character of your specific wedding dance,
learning step sequences, even choreographing sections.
Please Note: In general, choreographing your entire wedding dance
is not advised as, if there's a mistake, it is difficult to recover.
My emphasis is on learning how to dance. You'll have all the basic steps and a thorough understanding
of different dances and types of music, particularly in how the character of the dance is a tool
for interpreting the music being played.
If you are in a time crunch but want to maximize your lessons,
you can sometimes compress these 10 (55) minute lessons into 6 lessons,
four doubles, lasting 2 hours, and two singles (hour) lessons.
A Private Lesson guarantees optimal individual attention from the instructor.
However, you are NOT guaranteed a private room. A Studio is typically shared with other
Private Lessons taking place.
The music is also shared on an equal basis.
Wedding Dance Lessons
1.
A good wedding song optimally has a steady beat that you can feel. The song you select will determine the dance you do. Many slow songs are Fox Trots (Slow dance).
The other option ...if you want to do something different and special, is to choose a dance like Waltz, Tango, Swing or Salsa, (or a combination of two dances).
If you want to select the dance before you choose your wedding song, then select the music to fit the dance style.
If you need help selecting music... ask your dance instructor.
2. Try to select a song that is between Two to Three minutes long.
Longer that that and your guests may get bored.
3. Use a CD to practice your dance and put it on repeat.
Once you get comfortable with your dance steps and timing, also practice with
other songs and tempos so you can dance to a variety of music tempos.
This will also keep you from getting bored with your first dance song.
4. Practice is the only way to get comfortble leading and following
so that you will look and feel good
when you dance. The more you do it the better it feels !
Plan to practice between
dance lessons.... even two 15 minute sessions a week will make a world of difference.
6. If you want to look really great... take private dance lessons (5 to10), or buy a Wedding First Dance Dance Instruction DVD. The DVD Menu makes it easer to select each dance and repeat and learn the steps.
7. Find out how big your wedding reception dance floor is and try to practice
using the same approximate space.
8. Plan WHEN you will do your first dance (at the beginning of the reception or
after dinner), and how you will START and END your First dance.
9. Inform your Band or DJ when you plan to do your first dance, and be sure they
will play the song at the tempo (speed) you practiced your dance.
Also tell your photographer and or Video people when you plan to do your first
dance and what special dance moves you'd like them to capture...especially the
dip at the end of your dance.
10.No matter what happens during your first dance...like forgetting a step or
twirl, keep dancing and enjoy the thrill of this special time together. Have fun !
